" I am so grateful for the Academy's recognition of this film and the issue highlighted here. No-one who sees these women could fail to be moved. Each beautiful in their own way, their lives have been destroyed, their faces and bodies disfigured, often by members of their own families. They are the real heros here. They have been ostracised from society following the terrible attacks that have been inflicted upon them. I merely try to restore God's creation,, which has been destroyed by such evil acts of human beings, in the best way I know how. I hope that awareness of the cause will help to eradicate this beast of man-made disease from society."

Saving Face With Acid Attack Surgeon Mohammad Jawad - 14th February,2012

Acid attacks are a form of violent assault in which acid is thrown into the face and on the body of a person, typically young and female. Girls are often targeted by men after rejecting sexual advances or offers of marriage; or by their families for bringing them into perceived dishonour... '"The intention is to cause grievous bodily harm, to murder or kill-except they bloody don't die. Instead they are disfigured and destroyed, when they're still young with their whole life in front of them."
The phenomenon is most common in Cambodia, Afghanistan and Southern Asia. Official figures state that there are 100 cases of acid violence in Pakistan every year, although it's been estimated that the actual figure is far, far higher.

Saving Faces at Pakistan - 12th February 2012

His work in Pakistan, he says, is a 'moral obligation' for doctors like himself who received training in the country almost for free, and then left with their skills to join the NHS. He hopes that other doctors will be similarly inspired by the film. 'I wanted to show I was having a great time - training local people and enjoying the work,owning up to  my responsibilities and encouraging others to do the same.' Then he laughs,' And if I get an Oscar out of it, am I going to say no?'

Dr Mohammad Jawad and Zakia in 'Saving Face', one of the Oscar-nominated shorts playing at Coolidge Corner. 'Saving Face' moves in for a series of unsettling close-ups. The subjects of Daniel Junge's documentary are Pakistani women whose husbands and boyfriends have thrown acid in their faces- 100 such attacks are reported each year,with many others going unreported - and the plastic surgeons,legislators, and social workers striving to restore their bodies and spirits.

Saving Faces... from London to Karachi - 7th February,2012

Plastic surgeon Mohammad Jawad uses his skills to help the acid-attack victims and has travelled halfway round the world to Pakistan to reconstruct the faces of victims of domestic violence, from his Harley Street surgery in London, where his daily routine involves nose jobs and breasts enhancements. Rarely can one man have straddled two such contrasting world.
